Packed lunches have never been so easy! This chicken wrap is made with 3 ingredients, and it only takes a few minutes to make. And if you slice it into smaller pieces, it quickly becomes a turkey roll up recipe.

Oh, and there's no mayo or dressing, so this wrap can easily be made the night before and it won't get soggy by lunch the next day - so great!

Healthy chicken wrap cut in half with the inside showing.

Now, you are not going to believe me when you see the ingredients, but my kids like these so much that they requested I make these for the first day of school! My oldest two have been loving these wraps for a while. Just recently my youngest started asking for them, too (she's 7, so I flatten the wrap for her, so it is easier to eat).

This is another recipe that I came up with sort of on accident. My son had asked me to make him a wrap with chicken because his friend brought one for lunch and he thought it looked good.

I figured it was simple enough that I'd give it a shot. Well, after running out of cheese and regular lettuce, one day I tucked in some curly kale between two slices of turkey (I also use chicken), rolled it up to pack in their lunches and didn't say anything about it being different.

I knew they would eat it but was not expecting them to come home raving about how good it was. It turns out kale was the perfect addition because it added a nice crunch. I think the saltiness from the sliced turkey softens the bitterness raw kale can have.

As for packing lunches, make sure your kids have a lunch box that holds enough food and that they are willing to carry around 😉

    Why You'll Love This Recipe

This healthy chicken wrap makes the perfect addition to school lunches - it's easy enough that your older kids may just be able to make this themselves.

    • Three ingredients.
    • Quick and easy recipe.
    • Can quickly be turned into a turkey roll up recipe by slicing the wrap into smaller pieces.
    • Can be made the night before and it won't get soggy by lunch time the next day.
    • Fits in rectangle sized lunch containers or snack sized resealable bags. I use the lunch containers from Pottery Barn Kids for packing wraps for school lunches.

    Ingredient Notes

One package of oven roasted chicken breast to the left, curly kale in a square white bowl in the middle, and one piece of whole wheat Lavash flatbread to the right.
Either sliced turkey or sliced chicken can be used to make this recipe!
    • Sliced turkey or chicken breast I use Trader Joe's Organic Oven Roasted Turkey Breast (or Chicken Breast) that comes sliced. It can be found in their lunch meat and cheese section. It is made without added nitrates or nitrites (except for those naturally occurring in sea salt). Turkey and chicken are good sources of protein.
    • Kale Use curly kale. Kale is high in fiber, antioxidants, Calcium, and vitamins A, K, and C.
    • Lavash Flatbread I use Whole Wheat Lavash Flatbread from Trader Joe's. Use what you have! If you are unable to find flat bread, a medium sized flour tortilla could be used instead.

    Dietitian Tips

Keeping ingredients like whole wheat Lavash flatbread and sliced turkey (or chicken) stored in your freezer will help you on those crazy days when you are running low of refrigerated options and don't have time to run to the grocery store.

While a package of sliced turkey from your freezer will take at least overnight in your refrigerator to defrost, Lavash flatbread defrosts almost instantaneously. As soon as you take it out of the freezer, it's ready to roll into a wrap.

And kale is a hearty green, so it stays fresh for quite a while in the refrigerator. So, you might want to consider keeping some of this on hand (and/or spinach) as well.

    Step-by-Step Instructions

Four process shots in a collage: flatbread topped with one slice of turkey and kale; an additional slice of turkey on top of kale; all ingredients rolled up in the flatbread; up close image of the inside of the wrap once it was cut in half.

Here's a quick overview of the steps to make this healthy chicken wrap. For the full list of ingredients and instructions, scroll down to the recipe.

    1. Lay the flatbread out flat.
    2. Place one slice of turkey or chicken in the center of the flat bread.
    3. Place kale in the center of the slice of chicken.
    4. Lay the second slice of chicken on top of the kale.
    5. Roll the wrap up rather tightly and it's done!

    Expert Tips

    • Sliced turkey can be used in place of chicken if it's what you have. The flavor and texture will be similar.
    • For an even heartier wrap and to add more protein, add a third slice of turkey or a slice of cheese.
    • If you can only find large square pieces of Lavash flatbread, use kitchen shears to cut it in half down the middle, to create two pieces.
    • Tuscan kale or spinach can be used in place of curly kale, and it will still hold up well.
    • If you use lettuce instead of a dark green, either assemble the wrap the same morning that you are packing lunches or right before serving it to keep it from getting soggy.
    • Start on the short side of the flatbread when rolling this into a wrap.
    • If you are looking for additional ingredients for a healthy chicken wrap, a light spread of guacamole or a tiny drizzle of a lemon-garlic vinaigrette would add nice flavor.
    • If your kids won't accept a wrap without mayo or mustard, add some. It's okay!
    • When sending this for school lunch, be sure to pack it in an insulated lunch bag with an ice pack to keep it cold.

    Questions You May Have

What side should I serve with a turkey wrap?

I often pack fresh fruit salad, yogurt, maybe another veggie and then let my kids add lunchbox snacks in their school lunches in case they are still hungry.

How do you roll a turkey wrap?

Great question! In this case, because lavash flatbread is shaped like a rectangle, you should start with the short side and roll up and toward the other short end until it looks like the picture above. Tuck the end as you roll it.

What to put in a wrap?

Making a wrap shouldn't be as intimidating as it seems! There are so many options of what to put in a wrap. The key is not overfilling it so that you can actually wrap it and timing it right so that it does not get soggy.

Aside from turkey or chicken slices, hummus, black beans, chicken salad, tuna salad, and egg salad would all work in a wrap. You could also add veggies like greens, blanched green beans, bean sprouts, sliced bell pepper, or even roasted veggies to up the nutrient content. And, of course, there are all kinds of spreads you can add if you prefer.
