Air fried apple slices make the perfect after school snack and they are ready in just 6 minutes! The texture (soft with a touch of crunch) combined with the natural sweetness of the apple will have your kids asking for more!
Believe it or not I created this recipe by accident! I was on a mission to make the perfect apple chip.
I pulled the apple slices out of the air fryer to check the texture, as I wanted them crisp but not burnt. My oldest daughter walked by and wanted to try them while they were warm... She ate them all before I could put them back in to crisp up a little more, haha!
It turns out that she likes this softer consistency a lot better than traditional apple chips. Perhaps your kids will, too!
And if you are looking for a way to use up apples, you've got to make my apple oatmeal bake and homemade apple sauce recipes. They will quickly become your new family favorites, especially in the Fall!
What Makes This Recipe So Great
Made in the air fryer, these apple slices made a unique and healthy snack for kids.
- Keep the skin on to optimize fiber and vitamin intake and to create the best texture.
- Using an air fryer saves time. There is no need to preheat and cooking time is significantly reduced when compared to making these in the oven.
- Apple slices make an excellent snack alone or they can be served with yogurt and granola.
Ingredient Notes: Apples
- Apples are high in vitamin C, fiber, and potassium. They are also a rich source of phytochemicals which have been linked to reduced risk of various diseases, according to an article published by the American Dietetic Association.
- Apples have varying levels of sweetness, depending on the variety. Honey Crisp, Pink Lady, and Fuji apples work very well for this recipe! Still, any apple variety will do!
Kitchen Tools Needed
- Air fryer Air fryers save so much time because they heat up super-fast and reduce cooking time. I use the Cuisinart Digital Toaster Oven Air Fryer because it works as a toaster, oven, and air fryer. Love it!
- Mandolin Mandolins work to slice certain foods (like apples, potatoes, zucchini, cucumbers) into very thin and uniform sizes. I really thought I would be able to slice apples thin enough by hand to make these and I was not successful. So, I bought a handheld mandolin by OXO that works wonderfully! It is well worth the $20 I spent on it!
- Apples Any type of apple will work! I suggest using a crisp apple that your kids enjoy eating raw.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Here’s a quick overview of the steps to make these apple slices. For the full list of ingredients and instructions, scroll down to the recipe.
- Using a mandolin, slice an apple into very thin uniform slices. I set my slicer to the #2 setting which slices the apple in 2.5 mm slices.
- Coat your air fryer basket with a high heat oil, like avocado oil, to prevent food from sticking.
- Lay the apple slices in a single layer on a baking basket fit for your air fryer.
- Air fry at 325 degrees for 6 minutes.
- Serve and be ready to start your next batch!
Expert Tips
- Optional: use an apple corer to remove the stem and core of the apple before slicing it.
- Discard the core and stem of the apple.
- There is no need to preheat the air fryer (at least not the air fryer I use).
- Slight overlap of the apple slices is okay. The slices that overlap will stick together.
- The thicker the apple slices, the longer they will take to cook.
- Never use aerosol spray cans in your air fryer.
- It’s best to use a good quality oil mister or simply use a silicone basting brush to brush oil on to the air fryer basket to prevent food from sticking.
- Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for how to properly and safely use your air fryer.
- I used a Cuisinart Digital AirFryer Toaster Oven. Different air fryers might require small adjustments in temperature and/or cook time.
Questions You May Have
Yes, you absolutely can put fruit in the air fryer, and this recipe is just one example of that!
A vegetable peeler or cheese plane are the best alternatives to a mandoline. Whichever tool you use, be careful because blades are sharp!
If your kids prefer the texture of an actual apple chip, simply air fryer these apple slices for an additional 2 minutes or until they reach your desired consistency.
