Can Smoothies Be Made Without Yogurt?
Yes! Even though yogurt is often added to smoothies for protein and to help give smoothies creamy texture, it's not necessary.
Thankfully, for those who don't like the taste of yogurt or who have a milk allergy, there are many other ways to add protein and creaminess to smoothies.
For instance, chia seeds, hemp seeds, nut butters, some nut milks, milk, kefir, and protein powder can be used to add protein to smoothies. Various fruits and vegetables can make smoothies creamier, like frozen mango, banana, nut butters, and avocado.
Dietitian Tip
Smoothies are a great way to increase your intake of fruits and vegetables. And, because they don't require cooking, smoothies are convenient, especially when you're hungry and short on time.
Looking to add extra greens throughout the day? Add a handful of baby spinach to your morning smoothie made with your favorite fruits. It might change the color, but the flavor and texture will likely blend right in!

Helpful Tips for Making Smoothies Without Yogurt
- If you sub out fresh fruit for frozen fruits, like when using fresh strawberries instead of frozen, be sure to add ice to the recipe. Otherwise, your smoothie will be much thinner.
- In my experience, when I make smoothies with hemp hearts, there is often a thin layer of foam on top of my smoothie. The foam settles after a few minutes. This is normal.
- A high-speed blender will make a thick smoothie much faster than a good blender that has a less powerful motor.
- Adding a splash of fruit juice, pitted dates, or a small amount of maple syrup or honey will make smoothies sweeter.
Questions You May Have
Yes, you can use milk instead of yogurt in a smoothie. Milk is thinner than yogurt, so when using milk instead of yogurt to make a smoothie, cut back on the amount of milk you add.
If a smoothie recipe calls for plain Greek yogurt, you can replace yogurt with banana or frozen mango, so it doesn't lose its thickness.
Using coconut milk or regular milk instead of skim milk, adding chia seeds, and reducing the amount of liquid used can increase the thickness of smoothies as well.
There are various ways to add protein to smoothies without using yogurt.
For instance, milk and soy milk offer 8 grams of protein per cup, hemp hearts (also known as shelled hemp seeds) and chia seeds contain a little more than 3 grams of protein per tablespoon, peanut butter contains 4 grams of protein per tablespoon, and kefir contains about 9 grams of protein per cup.
Store leftover smoothies refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 2 days (in my opinion, they do not taste good after that). Just be sure to shake the leftover smoothie well while the lid is still on before serving it.
An easy way to store leftover smoothies in the freezer is to freeze the leftovers in an ice cube tray. Once the cubes of leftover smoothies are frozen, place them in a freezer bag to keep them frozen.
