Dietitian Tips
🤩Tip 1 Not only is this fruit salsa made without spice, but here I show you how it can be made without chunks! I know, I know. What's a mango salsa without chunks, right?
Well, sometimes kids have a hard time with chunky salsas because they can see all of the ingredients. And other times it's just that some people expect all salsas to be thin like traditional salsa. Or at least this was my husband's expectation 😆
In this case, just put the chunky salsa into a food processor and process until your desired salsa consistency is reached. It's as easy as that!
🤩Tip 2 Salsas are an easy way to increase fruits and veggies at meals AND they are a delicious way to expose kids to new foods. You never know - getting creative with adding something like red bell pepper in with pineapple and mango might just do the trick!

Helpful Tips
- Try to keep the pieces of pineapple, mango, and bell pepper similar in size.
- I cut the chunks of frozen fruit into small pieces while they are still frozen because I think it's easier. Then I let the small pieces of fruit finish defrosting before adding them in with the rest of the ingredients.
- Adding too much salt will ruin the flavor completely.
- This is a very sweet salsa. If you prefer more savory salsas, you might want to stick to more traditional tamato-based salsa recipes.
- Fresh mango and fresh pineapple can be used instead of frozen, it will just take longer to peel and cut the fruit into small pieces.
- Cherry tomatoes (quartered) can be used in place of red bell pepper.
- If your kids are adventurous eaters and don't mind bold flavors, consider adding small pieces of red onion and / or jalapeño to the salsa.
- For even more of a tropical flavor, sprinkle a small amount of Tajin in with the lime juice and salt.
- If your kids prefer salsa to have a smooth texture, simply put the salsa in a food processor and blend to get a smooth consistency.
Questions You May Have
Frozen fruit or ripe fresh fruit is best for making pineapple mango salsa.
Canned pineapple (drained) should work in this salsa recipe. But because canned pineapple typically has added sweeteners (like juice or corn syrup), it will probably make the salsa super sweet.
I have found that when you use frozen mango to make a fruit salsa like this one, it can be made a day or two ahead of time and still look and taste great. However, if you use fresh mango, it will likely soften and get a mushy texture within a day or two, so it is best to eat it the same day you make it.
