I don't know about you, but I always try to keep frozen fruits in my freezer. What I love most about frozen mango and pineapple is that they are super versatile. They can be used to make a smoothie, smoothie bowl, salad dressing, fruit salad, or salsa!

Trust me on the frozen fruit with this one. Of course, if you have fresh mango and fresh pineapple ready to be cut up, absolutely use it. Otherwise, save yourself time and follow the recipe as is because I know your kids will just love it!

Serve this mango salsa with pineapple as a delicious dip for tortilla chips or as an addition to simple meals like quesadillas, tacos, and burrito bowls.

    Ingredient Notes

    Pineapple Mango Salsa ingredients, labeled.
    • Frozen Mango and Pineapple Add a refreshing tropical flavor.
    • Red Bell Pepper High in antioxidants, vitamin C, and fiber. Red bell pepper adds some crunch and a pop of color to pineapple mango salsa.
    • Lime The acidity from fresh lime juice helps to balance out the sweetness of the fruit.
    • Cilantro Adds color and familiar flavor to salsa recipes.
    • Salt or Tajin Adding a small amount of salt helps to lessen the sweetness. Tajin is a chili lime seasoning that takes amazing with tropical fruits and takes this salsa to the next level. Tajin contains salt, so there's no need to add salt if using Tajin.

How to Make Pineapple Mango Salsa

Four step-by-step photos showing how to make pineapple mango salsa.
    1. Chop the red bell pepper, frozen mango, and frozen pineapple into very small pieces.
    2. Juice one lime.
    3. Rinse cilantro then cut into small pieces. I like to use my kitchen schears for this step.
    4. Mix all ingredients together and either store for later or serve and enjoy!

    Dietitian Tips

🤩Tip 1 Not only is this fruit salsa made without spice, but here I show you how it can be made without chunks! I know, I know. What's a mango salsa without chunks, right?

Well, sometimes kids have a hard time with chunky salsas because they can see all of the ingredients. And other times it's just that some people expect all salsas to be thin like traditional salsa. Or at least this was my husband's expectation 😆

In this case, just put the chunky salsa into a food processor and process until your desired salsa consistency is reached. It's as easy as that!

🤩Tip 2 Salsas are an easy way to increase fruits and veggies at meals AND they are a delicious way to expose kids to new foods. You never know - getting creative with adding something like red bell pepper in with pineapple and mango might just do the trick!

    Tajin: Chili Lime Seasoning
Tajin is a delicious chili lime seasoning that takes the flavor of many foods up a notch. In my observation, it's most commonly used in tropical countries and where Mexican-inspired food is more common (I've seen it in Costa Rica, Nasau, and stocked in an airbnb I rented in California).

    Helpful Tips

    • Try to keep the pieces of pineapple, mango, and bell pepper similar in size.
    • I cut the chunks of frozen fruit into small pieces while they are still frozen because I think it's easier. Then I let the small pieces of fruit finish defrosting before adding them in with the rest of the ingredients.
    • Adding too much salt will ruin the flavor completely.
    • This is a very sweet salsa. If you prefer more savory salsas, you might want to stick to more traditional tamato-based salsa recipes.
    • Fresh mango and fresh pineapple can be used instead of frozen, it will just take longer to peel and cut the fruit into small pieces.
    • Cherry tomatoes (quartered) can be used in place of red bell pepper.
    • If your kids are adventurous eaters and don't mind bold flavors, consider adding small pieces of red onion and / or jalapeño to the salsa.
    • For even more of a tropical flavor, sprinkle a small amount of Tajin in with the lime juice and salt.
    • If your kids prefer salsa to have a smooth texture, simply put the salsa in a food processor and blend to get a smooth consistency.

    Questions You May Have

Which fruit is best for Pineapple Mango Salsa?

Frozen fruit or ripe fresh fruit is best for making pineapple mango salsa.

Can you use canned pineapple to make salsa?

Canned pineapple (drained) should work in this salsa recipe. But because canned pineapple typically has added sweeteners (like juice or corn syrup), it will probably make the salsa super sweet.

Can I make mango salsa ahead of time?

I have found that when you use frozen mango to make a fruit salsa like this one, it can be made a day or two ahead of time and still look and taste great. However, if you use fresh mango, it will likely soften and get a mushy texture within a day or two, so it is best to eat it the same day you make it.
