Incredibly delicious and super easy Margherita Flatbread made with mozzarella, fresh basil, and a drizzle of balsamic glaze that comes together in minutes. It's perfect for busy weeknights!

I don't know about you, but I just love Italian food! I especially love all of the garlic and fresh basil, which might seem obvious if you've made my Caprese Bruschetta or Pesto recipes 😉
And with how much kids love pizza, I just can't believe I haven't posted a 'pizza-like' recipe until now! First, it was my BBQ Chicken Flatbread (which you've just got to try), and now this. Just wait until you see how easy they are to make!
I've been using really thin flatbreads for pizza recipes lately because they cook so much faster and so I can change up the toppings from one kid to the next. Plus, they are easy to eat and go well with pretty much anything!
This recipe calls for a few cherry tomatoes, not tons. So, if you find yourself with more cherry tomatoes than you know what to do with, try making a yummy homemade pasta sauce!

What is Margherita Flatbread?
Margherita flatbread is essentially a margherita pizza made with a very, very thin crust. Traditionally margherita pizza is made with fresh mozzarella, fresh tomatoes, fresh basil, olive oil, and garlic.
And because a traditional margherita pizza takes much longer to make, I developed this recipe using flatbread and garlic salt instead of fresh garlic so that you still get all of the incredible flavors of a margherita pizza but can make it in less time.
Why You'll Love This Recipe
- Quick and Easy It takes just about 12 minutes from start to finish! All you have to do is slice cherry tomatoes and shred fresh mozzarella. Then, while it cooks for just 7 minutes, you can cut fresh basil into slices with kitchen scissors. I can't wait for you to make this!
- Kid-Tested, Parent-Approved I have yet to meet a kid who doesn't like pizza!
Ingredient Notes
- Lavash Flatbread Other flatbreads or naan can be used instead, but the cooking time and amount of other ingredients will likely need to be increased.
- Olive Oil I use extra virgin olive oil
- Mozzarella Cheese Margherita pizza isn't margherita pizza without mozzarella! You can use thin slices of fresh mozzarella, but most people don't have that on hand. I shredded a block of mozzarella, and it was delicious!
- Cherry Tomatoes Adds color, texture, and incredible flavor! Tomatoes are especially high in vitamin C, folate, and potassium. They are also a good source of lycopene, which is an antioxidant.
- Garlic Salt Just a pinch goes a long way.
- Balsamic Glaze A drizzle of balsamic glaze (sometimes referred to as balsamic reduction) makes this flatbread explode with flavor.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 450 degrees.
- While the oven is preheating, slice cherry tomatoes and shred or slice the mozzarella.
- Lay the flatbread on a baking sheet.
- Use a basting brush to cover the flatbread with a thin layer of olive oil.
- Sprinkle the garlic salt over the olive oil.
- Spread the cheese out in a thin layer, covering the flatbread. Leave about ¼ inch on each edge without cheese.
- Spread slices of cherry tomatoes evenly over the flatbread.
- Bake in the oven for 7 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and the edges are golden brown.
- Remove from oven and top with fresh basil.
- Drizzle balsamic glaze on top. Slice and serve!
Expert Tips
- This recipe makes one flatbread.
- Do not over-do it on the toppings. The crust is super thin, so it's best to keep a light layer of toppings.
- The ingredient amounts listed are for one flatbread sized 8 ½ by 4 ½ inches. You will need to adjust the amounts of ingredients when using flatbreads with a smaller or larger surface area.
- The basil leaves can be place on whole or, for thin strips of fresh basil, slice the basil leaves using kitchen scissors.
- To make this more like the Margherita Flatbread Pizza from Panera, use tomato sauce instead of olive oil (theirs actually calls for a tomato bell pepper sauce) and use a blend of fontina and mozzarella cheeses. They do not drizzle balsamic glaze on top, but you will thank me for recommending it!😋
- Use either a pizza slicer or kitchen shears to cut the flatbread into slices.
What to Serve with Margherita Flatbread
The great thing about flatbreads is that they can be served as an appetize or main entree and they go with pretty much anything! Here are a few ideas I've come up with 🙂
- Salad Either a simple lettuce salad or Caesar salad
- Soup If your kids are really hungry, you can serve a hearty soup like carrot lentil or butternut squash soup. Otherwise, a light tomato or more brothy soup would go nicely.
- Roasted Veggies Either Roasted brussel sprouts or broccoli would taste great with flatbread.
Questions You May Have
No, the ingredients of naan bread and flatbread are different. Still, either one can be used to make flatbread pizzas.
Yes. What makes them different is the crust. Pizza crust is made with yeast (which makes the crust thicker), while flatbread is not.
Balsamic glaze can be found in the vinegar section of most grocery stores, at Trader Joe's, and on Amazon.
