While I like to change things up a bit by making BBQ Chicken Flatbread pizza, the rest of my family has more traditional tastebuds, which is why this Margherita flatbread pizza is my number one go to.
I should add that this easy Margherita flatbread pizza recipe calls for a few cherry tomatoes, not tons. So, if you find yourself with more cherry tomatoes than you know what to do with, try making a yummy homemade pasta sauce!

What is Margherita Flatbread?
Margherita flatbread is essentially a Margherita pizza made with a very thin pizza crust, naan bread, or Lavash flatbread.
I developed this recipe using flatbread and garlic salt instead of regular pizza crust and fresh garlic so that you still get all of the incredible flavors of a Margherita pizza in less time.
Why You'll Love This Recipe
This is an easy pizza recipe using store-bought flatbread crust to save time.
- Quick and Easy Recipe It takes just about 12 minutes from start to finish!
- Simple Ingredients This is a simple recipe made with simple ingredients! All of the ingredients can be found in the grocery store year-round.
- Kid-Tested, Parent-Approved I have yet to meet a kid who doesn't like pizza for dinner! And because flatbread pizza has such a thin crust, it's even easier to eat. Plus, it also makes a perfect appetizer.
Dietitian Mom Tip
I like to use flatbread pizza night as a way to cater to my kids once in a while. I do this by setting all of the toppings out and letting them assemble their own flatbread pizza.
Ingredient Notes

- Flatbread I use Lavash flatbread, but other flatbreads or naan (or even pita bread) can be used instead (you'll just need to adjust the cooking time and amount of ingredients). Flatbread is often found in the bread aisle of most grocery stores, while naan bread can be found in the bread aisle or frozen food section.
- Mozzarella Cheese Margherita pizza isn't margherita pizza without gooey mozzarella cheese! You can use pieces of fresh mozzarella or mozzarella pearls, but most people don't have that on hand. I use freshly shredded mozzarella, and it's delicious!
- Cherry Tomatoes Add color, texture, and incredible flavor! Tomatoes are especially high in vitamin C, folate, and potassium. They are also a good source of lycopene, which is an antioxidant.
- Garlic Salt Just a pinch goes a long way.
- Basil Use fresh basil if you can. If you don't have fresh basil but you have basil pesto, try adding a light drizzle or serve it as a dip on the side. Yum!
- Balsamic Glaze A drizzle of balsamic glaze (sometimes referred to as balsamic reduction) makes this flatbread explode with flavor. Balsamic reduction can be used instead. Found in the vinegar section of most grocery stores, including Trader Joe's.
How to Make Margherita Flatbread Pizza

- Use a basting brush to cover the flatbread with a thin layer of olive oil.
- Sprinkle the garlic salt over the olive oil then spread the cheese out in a thin layer, covering the entire flatbread. Leave about ¼ inch on each edge without cheese.
- Spread cherry tomato slices evenly over the top of the flatbread.
- Bake in the oven for 7 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and the edges are golden brown. Remove from oven and top with fresh basil, then drizzle balsamic glaze on top.
Helpful Tips
- Do not overdo it on the toppings. The crust is super thin, so it's best to keep a light layer of toppings.
- Thicker flatbreads and naan may require an additional 2-3 minutes. Lavash flatbread is so thin, so it can burn quickly.
- The ingredient amounts listed are for one flatbread sized 8 ½ by 4 ½ inches. You will need to adjust the amounts of ingredients when using flatbreads with a smaller or larger surface area.
- Place fresh basil leaves on the flatbread whole or slice the basil leaves using kitchen scissors.
- To make this more like the Margherita Flatbread Pizza from Panera, use tomato sauce instead of olive oil (theirs calls for a tomato bell pepper sauce) and use a blend of fontina and mozzarella cheeses. They don't drizzle balsamic glaze on top, but you will thank me for recommending it!😋

What to Serve with Margherita Flatbread Pizza
The great thing about flatbreads is that they can be served as an appetize or main entree and they go with a variety of side dishes.
- Salad A simple lettuce salad, Caesar salad (my daughter's favorite!), or a Tuscan kale salad (my favorite!) taste amazing with the flavors of Margherita pizza!
- Soup Serve a hearty soup like carrot lentil or butternut squash soup as a side with flatbreads.
Questions You May Have
No. The ingredients of naan bread and flatbread are different. Still, either one can be used to make flatbread pizzas.
Yes, what makes them different is the crust. Pizza crust is made with yeast (which makes the crust thicker), while flatbread is not.
Yes, absolutely! I'd reduce the temperature to 425 degrees Fahrenheit and air fry for 5 minutes, adding a minute or two if it's not quite done yet. Keep a close eye on it so it doesn't burn.
