    You are going to love this watermelon with Tajin recipe whether you serve it on a stick as an easy appetizer or delicious snack or tossed together to make a simple summer salad.

    • Easy Recipe No cooking or baking. And the best part is that there are different ways to serve fruit that are all so easy, like serving it on a stick!
    • Simple Ingredients Fresh watermelon, cinnamon, and Tajin. That's it!
    • Kid-Approved When I first discovered this combination, I told my son, "You've just got to try this!" He was like, "this is so good!" He is my most adventurous eater who likes Tajin, Chamoy, and everything flavorful, so that definitely helps. He also added that the cinnamon helps to balance out the Tajin and watermelon.

    Dietitian Tip

    As a registered dietitian who has a passion for providing busy families with tips on how they can increase fruit and vegetable intake without making more work for themselves, I often find myself saying, "sometimes it's not what you serve, but how you serve it."

    Watermelon is no exception, especially when you're about half-way through summer and your kids are asking for something different, lol.

    A simple change like sprinkling cinnamon and Tajin on fresh watermelon takes less than a minute and yet totally transforms the flavor profile so that it feels like you are eating something new and different.

    Recipe Variations

    • Tropical fresh fruit Mango and pineapple also go well with Tajin. Feel free to get creative and alternate the fruits you use with this recipe.
    • Fresh Lime Juice If you love lime and don't have cinnamon, add a squeeze of fresh lime to the watermelon and Tajin for more citrus flavor.
    • Without Cinnamon My son also likes watermelon with Tajin as it is. But he agreed that the cinnamon adds an extra bonus because it helps balance out the watermelon taste and spice from chili powder that's in Tajin.

    Ingredient Notes

    • Seedless Watermelon Use fresh sweet watermelon chunks.
    • Tajin Seasoning A Mexican spice blend made with ground chili peppers, salt, and dehydrated lime juice. It can be found in most grocery stores, including Aldi.
    • Cinnamon I absolutely love the flavor that Saigon Cinnamon adds to this recipe. Saigon Cinnamon tastes sweeter than Ceylon cinnamon.

    How to Make Tajin and Watermelon

    1. Either put the watermelon chunks in a bowl to make a watermelon salad, lay them out on a plate (as pictured above), or place the chunks one-by-one on wooden skewers.
    2. Sprinkle cinnamon and then Tajin on top of the watermelon.
    3. Mix it all together if serving it as a watermelon salad. If making watermelon skewers, serve it as is and enjoy!

    Helpful Tips

    • Tajin is a salty Mexican seasoning blend, so there is no need to add more salt to it. And if you are looking to cut back on salt, Tajin does sell a reduced sodium version.
    • If you can't find Tajin, you can use a different chili lime seasoning. Trader Joe's even sells their own version.
    • If these flavors are new to you and your kids, sprinkle the seasonings on a few pieces of watermelon and taste it before adding it to all of your freshly cut watermelon. Afterall, there's nothing like making a lot of something that your whole family doesn't care for 😉
    • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator and use within 2-3 days.

    Questions You May Have

    What does watermelon and Tajin taste like?

    It's a little sweet and a little spicey with a slight taste of citrus from the lime in Tajin.

    What can I use in place of Tajin?

    Other blends of chili lime seasoning should work well. I haven't tried it but I would thing topping watermelon with a light sprinkle of salt and chili powder then adding fresh lime zest and a squeeze of fresh lime would give it a similar flavor.

    If you try these substitutions, please let me know!

    Can I make watermelon and Tajin ahead of time?

    Yes! In my opinion, watermelon, like most fresh fruit, tastes better the day you prepare it. Thankfully though, it still tastes great the next day.

    While you can sprinkle the cinnamon and Tajin on ahead of time, I'd suggest waiting until right before you serve it since it takes less than a minute.

    Equipment

    • 1 chefs knife to cut watermelon
    • 1 Cutting board
    • 1 measuring spoon

    Ingredients
      

    • 3 cups Watermelon Cut into chunks.
    • ½ teaspoon Cinnamon I use Saigon cinnamon from Costco.
    • ½ teaspoon Tajin

    Instructions
     

    • Wash your watermelon under cold water and then use a sharp knife to cut it into chunks.
    • Either lay the watermelon chunks out on a plate in a single layer, put the chunks on toothpicks or wooden skewers, or put them in a bowl (if serving this more as a salad).
    • Sprinkle cinnamon on top of the watermelon chunks.
    • Sprinkle Tajin on top of the cinnamon that's on top of the watermelon chunks.
    • Serve and enjoy! If using a bowl and serving this as a salad, use a spoon to stir the seasonings in with the rest of the watermelon before serving.
