Island Green Tropical Smoothie Recipe

Equipment

1 Blender High Speed Blender. I use a Vitamix or NutriBullet Pro blender.

Ingredients

1 cup spinach
½ naval orange Seedless. Peel first.
¼ avocado See notes for how to easily remove the flesh from a ripe avocado.
1 cup frozen pineapple pieces
1 cup frozen mango chunks
¾ cup coconut water

Instructions

Place all ingredients in a blender. Blend until smooth.

Notes

Can substitute frozen banana for frozen mango or a ripe banana for the avocado. Frozen mango and frozen banana add natural sweetness and a creamy texture to smoothies.
Any leafy green can be used in place of some or all of the spinach. If using kale, be sure to remove the thick ribs first.
For a higher calorie smoothie, use coconut milk instead of coconut water.
If you use fresh fruit, be sure to blend in a handful of ice cubes. It may taste a little watered down, but it will still work. Most kids like their smoothies cold.
Here's how I remove the flesh from an avocado: slice the avocado lengthwise, then twist the halves apart. Use a spoon to scoop out the flesh of the half without the seed.
Add a splash or two of orange juice if you don't have a fresh orange on hand.
If you are using a low profile Vitamix canister, you may want to double the recipe. This recipe makes just enough smoothie to cover the blades of my low-profile Vitamix blender.
Store leftovers refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 2 days. Give it a stir before serving.
